30 Day Challenges, Part 5 - Vector Cannon

This is day five of thirty in the Doctor Who, otaku, and video game challenges. Oh god, five of thirty? I have 25 days left?? TWENTY-FIVE DAYS LEFT!! ...awesome, I'm loving these. They're quite a bit of fun and I totally recommend you try a challenge or two if you want to really start thinking more about stuff you enjoy. I'll totally read yours if you do it, promise.

Doctor Who Challenge, Day 5
Your favourite companion.

Oh boy, this is a bit of a largely-scoped question, isn't it. The new series had only a few companions per Doctor, but the old series switched companions out every season, every story almost. I mean honestly, it's staggering how many ancillary characters there were. Only a few really stick out in my head, though - Adrick, Ramona, K-9, Sarah Jane, the Doctor's daughter, Jamie. Yeah, that's a lot then.

...but in the end, there was always one companion that seemed able to back up the Doctor on anything - a faithful companion, yet gung-ho and as able as the Doctor ever was. That companion was Brigadier Leftbridge-Stewart, the head of UNIT. He mostly hung around the earth-locked Jon Pertwee incarnation of the Doctor, but even after that, he showed up occasionally to battle Daleks and dinosaurs alike alongside Tom Baker, Peter Davidson, and even Sylvester McCoy in what is basically the Brigadier's swan song, Battlefield. I have a soft spot for the ol' Brigadier, and though he was never part of the TARDIS gang, he was always an ally the Doctor could depend on like he would an old chum.

Otaku Challenge, Day 5
Any video of the RPG game you are playing now.

While I'm not really playing this game with much devotion (I got a game over and I became disillusioned and panicky and gave up, a wee bit), I do play it occasionally and it is a wonderfully enjoyable experience. Anyone who hasn't, you should definitely play Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale. It's cute, charming, tongue-in-cheek, and... actually surprisingly deep, too. If you wanna test the waters before shelling out $20 for it, there is a free demo, so certainly check this out.

Video Game Challenge, Day 5

This question came in two parts technically. It asked me what game character I feel I'm most like, then in brackets, "wish you were most like." Now, I take that as two questions, challenge. So run with me here, and I'll answer the first half - the game character I feel I am most like - and then, separately, the second half - the game character I wish I was most like. Inspiring stuff.

Game character you feel you are most like.

Coach is a big fella. He's not very fit. He loves comfort food, like cheeseburgers and chocolate. He can barely run up a flight of stairs, and needs all the help of his friends to get from point A to point B. On his own, he is nothing. And yet, Coach is one of the biggest assets the Left 4 Dead 2 survivors have against the zombie horde - quite literally. He respects his companions, and he helps where he can. He has a big heart to go with his big stomach - and sometimes, that's all you'll ever need to achieve the impossible. Sappy? Maybe. But I love Coach, he reminds me of all the good that's in me when my stature gets me down. Also, he's a damn good aim with the auto-shotty. It's sort of poetic, when you think about it. *sniff*

Game character you wish you were most like.

Defined by Steve Purcell as "pure id, the uncoordinated instinctual trends of the human psyche," Max (of Sam & Max fame) is a lot like Batman's The Joker, if he were a huggably adorable lagomorph. Max, by definition, has no inhibition, with a "pinball-like stream of consciousness," for which he uses the entire world as his vessel to project. To live a life of pure id, is something I'm sure everyone wishes at one point or another, myself included.

The fact of the matter is, Max is deranged and unhinged, maniacal and borderline psychotic - and as a result, is willing to participate in anything. Honestly, this guy is enthusiastic about pretty much whatever he is presented with... as long as it can hold his relatively short attention span. Max is a gritty, grim mirror into the depths human psychosis; but he doesn't seem to care about it, he just rolls with what he's been given. Never defeated, only momentarily confused - Max is everything we all wish we could be, but as long as we retain a conscience, quite likely never will be. It's sort of poetic, when you think about it. *sniff*

Remember to check back tomorrow for the next batch of challenge answers - an anime I love that most people hate, the most annoying game character, and anything that tickles my fancy. (The Doctor Who challenge asks of me that last one, just roll with it.)
