30 Day Challenges, Part 4 - Cheers, Big Ears

Hello, and welcome to today's 30 Day Challenges for Dr Who, otaku, and video games. "But Andy," I hear you cry. "You've already posted a 30 Day Challenge today!" Well, shut up and let me explain. I missed yesterday and had to fill it out this morning. So that was yesterday's, and this is today's, alright? Okay. I mean I know everyone was rampaging through the streets due to the anarchy of me posting two one-day challenges on the same date, so I just thought I'd clear that up before another democracy fell to the rampaging Andy's Blog fans. ...dear god I'm deluded.

Doctor Who Challenge, Day 4
Your favourite Doctor.

This is just cruel. I mean this is like asking to choose between your children. To choose whether to give up breathing or air. To choose between puppies and kittens. I love them all equally! They are all wonderful! Even those typically regarded as not that great - Colin Baker, William Hartnell, Christopher Eccleston - have so many redeeming qualities about them, whether it be something in their personality, some of the stories they partake in - or their ouftits. So, okay. My favourite Doctor Who. Out of all eleven that are canon. Umm... god.

I have an urge to shout out Peter Cushing and totally invalidate this question entirely, but what the fuck. Christopher Eccleston. I love his Doctor the most. I know, I know - he's typically regarded as "bad". And he only got one series - thirteen episodes - not enough to grow attached or comfortable with him. But... he was the start of the new generation of Doctor Who fans, wasn't he? He was the face of Doctor Who when it began. He was the one that forged the initial relationship with the Rose character, without which David Tennant wouldn't have had even half of his emotional likability. He also really helped cement the series dark, dark tone - and his characterization was really the cornerstone of the new Doctor Who's atmosphere and tone.

And... he really is one of the only Doctors that remained as quirky and charming at the end as they were during their initial "BAM! I'm the Doctor!" stage. The short time he was there really helped and keep his likability flatlined - even Tom Baker's Doctor started to become a little grating after four years. So, the ninth Doctor, Christopher Eccleston's, is my favourite Doctor. Rage now, nerds.

Otaku Challenge, Day 4
Most expensive otaku item you purchased.

This one is hard too, but mostly because my memory is somewhat eschewed. It's either the Final Fantasy XIII Limited Edition, the Full Metal Panic! series boxset, or the BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Limited Edition. The Final Fantasy XIII boxset cost me $130 initially, but I later sold it; then I got it back as a Christmas gift. Full Metal Panic! cost me something like $80 at a bit of discount. And... BlazBlue... I got it cheap from eBay, but I think it's worth roughly $150 down here. So I don't know. Ummm. I'm going to say BlazBlue, because I think it's worth more, and also I hate Final Fantasy XIII with a raging passion. So there were go, that wasn't as hard to figure out as I thought it would be.

As a side note, there is another BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Special Edition I really want my hands on. It's called Continuum Shift: Fan Edition, and it comes with downloadable characters and a Noel figurine alongside the Limited Editions. I would have bought it instead of the Limited Edition if only I knew about it at the time. Damn, that would have been a clear winner in that case! Huh, maybe I should've just lied about owning the Fan Edition and cut that whole first paragraph. Ehh.

Video Game Challenge, Day 4
Your guilty pleasure game.

Umm... define "guilty pleasure game". A lot of those visual novel hentai-style point-and-click games are pretty goddamn guilty pleasures... do those count as guilty pleasure games? What about Call of Duty as a series? I really quite enjoy them, but they're transparent and poorly made. Are those guilty pleasures? Or, I really really love replaying the Half-Life games over and over, do they count as guilty pleasure games? Huh?

Oh, here we go. Wikipedia says, "a guilty pleasure is something one enjoys and considers pleasurable despite feeling guilt for enjoying it". That... slightly narrows it down, I guess. Barely.

Hmm... guilty pleasure game. A game I feel guilty for enjoying, not for just playing? I'd have to say... Super Mario Galaxy 2. Goddamn I felt weird playing this game. I loved every inch of it, but there were so many conflicting emotions. "This is just the first game with Yoshi in it!" "This is a game designed for children!" "Nintendo are omnipotent dickholes!" "It's on the Wii!" ...but yes, if there's one game I've ever felt trepidations for enjoying, as apposed to owning or playing, it's Super Mario Galaxy 2. Man, I love it, but I really shouldn't be, in hindsight. Or in foresight, for that matter.

Tomorrow, you'll find out my favourite Doctor Who companion, the RPG I'm playing now (I am?), and the game character I feel (or wish) I was most like.
