In today's challenges, among other things, I make the point that the ending of Azumanga Daioh is an incredibly depressing one, due to the fact that the girls in the series are in all likelyhood to dumb to see their lives through to any happy ending. I also talk about Team Fortress 2 some more, and embrace (some more) my inner homosexual in the Doctor Who challenge. Answers, away!
A Who-related Youtube Video.
Avenue Q is a stageplay/musical, a send-up of Seaseme Street, and as far as I can tell the "Q" stands for "queer". It has such things as a gay Bert and Ernie couple, and Miss Piggy envisioned as a whore. (NO CHANGE THERE THEN, HAR HAR HAR.) Doctor Who is, well, you know... Doctor Who. And this is what happens when those two things collide in a messy, sticky singularity. I know, it's uncanny how well it gels. That's Russell Davies for ya.
Otaku Challenge, Day 23
Anime scene that made you cry.
Azumanga Daioh is an insanely funny series. It's moe as all hell, which is a massive turn-off for most people, but it's probably one of few "comedy" anime series than has a well-rounded cast that are funny completely on their own. It's much funnier to watch idiots when they're happy with themselves.
But at the end of the series, there's a foreboding sense that none of these girls will succeed. At all. We have watched them all through high school, and they have been sweet and innocent despite being (mostly) a pack of complete retards who outright celebrate when they fail tests. ...and that's fine! It's good enough for comedy! But it's very hard to get those comedy-driven characters and see them off with their future endeavors, when it's painfully obvious; they will never get in to university, they will never get a career or job they care about, they will be stuck serving coffee in some cafe somewhere for the rest of their lives. They are so happy and full of joy and anticipation for the future at the end of Azumanga Daioh - and all we see is Chiyo looking off at them like, "man, they screwed." And right she is. Shed a tear for the morons, people.
Video Game Challenge, Day 23
Game you think has the best graphics or artstyle.
I asked a friend, "is Team Fortress 2 too obvious?" And he replied with, "yes. Gears of War is a bold choice." But Gears of War has no art-style. Hell, I'd like to visit Epic to see the granules of dirt they used as reference for their tones of brown. So yes, Team Fortress 2. It's thanks to the art-style that it's bubbling with the personality it has, and it's thanks to the engine enhancements that the art style is done any justice. It is Valve's best looking game, as far as I'm concerned - a mid-50s spytech influence drawn in an exaggerated cartoon way, and rendered like a Pixar movie. Fucking awesome.
Tune in tomorrow for the most addictive otaku game, my favourite "classic" game, and... more of whatever tickles my fancy from Doctor Who. Sigh.
