Downloaded the Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X demo from Steam. Gonna do a little mini-review. The most confusing thing is that it really shouldn't be labelled as Tom Clancy. The story is some retarded capitalist bullshit (as usual) and so it's kinda the opposite of the usual psycho-thriller Tom Clancy staple. Or maybe I'm just losing my mind.
But the gameplay was fun. I did many barrel rolls, trying hard to block out the stupid "futuristic jet" (yeah, apparently jets from 20 years in the future will look almost the same as they did 20 years ago, 'cept with podracer engines for backburners) and imagine StarFox in my mind. Then some bad dudes showed up and tried to wang my ship.
So I pressed A a lot (on my 360 controller) and shot missiles at them. It was really cool; whenever you shoot a missile at someone the camera follows the missile up until your target asplodes. Neat, I thought.
As usual, the demo forgets to make me want more. That's the thing with demoes in a game like this. It gives me 2, almost standalone missions, and then lets me play them through over and over again. No story crecendos, no pinnacle. Demoes have started a trend of lacking the "set-up".
To me, a perfect demo needs to set you up for a massive crecendo event, then pull it away from you at the last second. The only game whose demo made me want to buy the game was the Peter Jackson's King Kong The Official Game of the Movie demo. Damn, that demo was sweet.
So what can we learn from this? Make better demoes, Tom Clancy and friends!
Andy out.
