30 Day Challenges, Part 11 - Soon Thereafter

Turns out "soon" means something like 22 hours of internet time. Oh well, I'd say this is probably one of the cheeriest 30 Day Challenges so far - the Doctor Who, otaku, and videogame challenges are probing, as usual, yet enjoyably varied. Have fun reading, guys, and I'll be back soon for reals with Part 12. Then I'll be all caught up, promise.

Doctor Who Challenge, Day 11
Your favourite season.

"Seasons" are a bit hard to pick of Doctor Who, since I don't know where the old seasons stop or start. I quite liked the opening serials of Peter Davidson, for example, but what series is that? I guess I could look it up. But that defeats the whole point, of choosing from what I know, doesn't it? So rejoice, those who only followed the series since 2005, I'm more or less confined by my finite knowledge to the new series of Doctor Who.

So. My favourite series so far would have to be... the latest one. Matt Smith's first season. Season 35, the chirping voice in my ear tells me. I know, Matt Smith took some time to get used to, but I just think it's overall the most solid season we've had out of Doctor Who so far. Also, it certainly doesn't hurt that Steven Moffat had his first run as showrunner - he has always been my favourite Doctor Who writer for the most recent series, so having him get his own whole series is just sort of a nerd's wet dream right there. Assuming, anyway, that the aforementioned nerd is me.

Otaku Challenge, Day 11
A light novel you can suggest.

Well, I can suggest any light novel, but I assume you mean out of the ones that I have actually read, Mr Challenge. And, honestly, the one light novel I've read is The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Can I recommend it? Well the translation is a little stock-standard, I'm sure the translator (whoever it is who did the English translations) was trained as an editor and not an author.

Beyond that, it's a fairly original and engrossing plot with a more-than likable, Charlie Brown-esque lead character and an anti-heroine who grows on you more and more as the plot rolls on; accompanied by a varied cast of interspersed and interplanetary SOS Brigade members. And if you think Haruhi is "annoying," it helps that it's read out from Kyon's point of view the whole story - and Kyon, too, thinks Haruhi is just a pain in the arse. Worth a read if you can find it, for sure. Call that a recommendation.

Video Game Challenge, Day 11
Gaming system of choice.

Why, I play primarily all my games on the personal computer, my dear chum! I've had to inject it with computational steroids to get it working even half-decently, but with with impressive stats (for 2010, anyway), and enough processing power to run Crysis smooth as silk, it's the hub of all my video game-related entertainment. ...and for those who must know the specs: Gigabyte 790XT DDR3 motherboard, AMD Phenom II X4 945 Processor running at 3.0GHz with 4 cores, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, Windows 7 64-bit, 2 x 1TB HDD, and a Radeon HD5770 Hawk. Windows rates it as a 5.9 out of 7. (Yes, that's arbitrary as hell, but just bear with me.)

However, I would be amiss not to mention (as I always do when these sort of "what's your system?" questions arise), that I do not exclusively game on any one system, and those who do are idiots of the highest order that are only going so far as to punish themselves and but an unnecessary lock on the scope of gaming which they may enjoy. Alright, that's it for me, I'm done here.

Tune in soon - promise! - for the silliest anime filler, a game everyone should play, and from Doctor Who - whatever tickles my fancy. Eh.
